Support 5th Grade Activities
Welcome, 5th graders & families! Your children have made it to the top tier of Alcott Elementary and will graduate in the Spring of 2024. Imagine all the growing, learning, friendship and fun that has taken place at Alcott Elementary. In this final year, your children will be solidifying those memories, and building so many additional skills, friendships and experiences that will become an important part of the foundation for their future.
Every year the 5th Grade Committee collects “5th grade dues” from parents to support the 5th graders' special year-end activities. We ask for your dues contribution of $40 this year and sincerely thank you for your generosity.
In addition to the dues mentioned, you can also contribute to 5th grade activities directly by buying “support shares” of three activities: the annual outing, the Moving Up ceremony, and the 5th grade-made yearbook.
Volunteer Opportunities
There will be many opportunities for parents/guardians to help our Fifth-graders have a wonderful last spring at Alcott! If you have already expressed your interest or are interested in helping with these 5th grade events, there will be a Zoom meeting on Thursday evening, September 14th ( 7:30- 8:30 pm). A link will be emailed through your Room Parents next week.
Fifth Grade events and activities will include:
1. Spring Fair at Alcott, DATE TBD
Last year, the traditional 5th grade-led winter fair was reimagined as this outdoor extravaganza in May, and it was a smashing success! The fair will be held during school hours and will include games and activities, a raffle and perhaps some crafts for sale. This day will be designed, produced and led by 5th graders in conjunction with their teachers for the enjoyment of the rest of the student community. Volunteer opportunities for parents/guardians will include:
(a) Crafts sale - donating materials, organizing craft-creations
(b) Raffle-baskets - brainstorming basket themes, creating wish-lists, reaching out for donations/orders of wish-list items, assembling baskets for raffle
(c) Games and activities - coordinating with 5th graders and teachers as they create Spring Fair games and activity stations
(d) In-person, day-of volunteering - just "being there" to set up, help 5th graders sell crafts and raffle tickets, run games, help younger students, clean up afterwards and anything else that is needed!
2. 5th Grade Yearbook
The 5th grade Yearbook is a rite of passage for all 5th graders at Alcott. The book is designed and created in school in May, coordinated by the teachers and students themselves. Each 5th grader designs their own page, with special sections of baby photos and artwork per classroom. Volunteer opportunities for parents/guardians will include:
(a) Reaching out to 5th grade parents to gather photos
(b) Coordinating with the 5th grade teaching team to receive and distribute design files
(c) Working with local printing shop (Concord Printers) to produce yearbook copies
3. 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony
This "graduation" ceremony is organized by the school and will be held on one of the final days of school. We are looking for volunteers to help make the ceremony special by providing the kids with graduation certificates, getting special gifts for the teachers and presenting a class gift to the school.
4. Alcott Clap-Out
It has been an Alcott tradition that, on the last day of school, the school organizes a “clap-out” where the other students line the hallways as our 5th graders leave the school building for the last time! The 5th graders file out of the school for their last time, usually with many 5th grade parents, guardians and friends to cheer them on outside near the playground/basketball courts. The exit point will be determined closer to the date, but mark your calendars for the 5th Grade Clap-Out on the last day of school!
