ALCOTT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Alcott Family Movie Night, Friday Oct. 27th at 7pm: Bring a blanket, or a chair (to sit in the back) and enjoy your favorite show! Get your tickets here! Movie choices this year are: Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken (2023), The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), and Elemental (2023);the winner will be announced midday Friday via social media and email.

Event opens at 6:30pm to set up your blankets or chairs on the blacktop, Movie starts running at 7pm. Snack concessions available at the event for $1 and $2.

Alcott School Turkey Trot - Save the Date! The Turkey Trot is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, November 1 from 9:45-11:45am at Emerson Track. Last year we raised $9,181. We have raised over $140,000 in the past 27 years and helped multiple local and national charities. This year our pledges will be helping the Open Table and the Concord Recreation Department Scholarship Fund. Please note this is not a PTG fundraiser. 100% of what we raise goes directly to the charities! See Mr. G.’s letter here.

Concord Carlisle Youth Hockey In Town Registration Open

Registration is now open for Learn to Skate, Mosquitos, and Hot Shots. 

  • Hot Shot Hockey is for Boys and Girls 8-15 yrs old and is an in-town hockey league. Our season consists of 14+ weeks of games and practices starting on November 15th.

  • Learn-to-Skate is for children 3yrs and up and teaches skating fundamentals. The CCYH Mosquito program is considered our "Hockey 101" program and is geared for Girls and Boys who were born between 1/1/2015 and 12/31/2018. Both programs begin November 18th at the Middlesex School rink. 

The CCHS Boys Basketball Program is once again hosting its annual Veterans Day Fundraiser on Friday, November 10th at CCHS from 9am - 2pm. Please click here to register and learn more. All proceeds benefit the boys basketball program. 

Concord Youth Theatre announces its Mainstage production of A Year with Frog and Toad, a hit Broadway musical based on the children's books by Arnold Lobel. What happens when two best friends with opposite personalities wake up from hibernation? Hilarious adventures throughout the seasons! Frog,Toad and their memorable friends plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. This upbeat musical will entertain the whole family!  CYT’s Mainstage Company is made up of students in grades 5-12 and performs plays that are literature based and age appropriate for all. Showtimes are November 3 and 10 @ 7:30PM, November 4 and 11 @4:00PM, and November 5 and 12 @ 2:30PM. All performances are held in the CYT theater at 53 Church Street in Concord. Concord public forum:  Nov. 9 from 7:00:– 8:30 p.m. at Concord Town Hall. On behalf of the Task Force, you are invited to learn about and comment on its work for the Select Board, advising on whether to acquire the superfund site in West Concord known as the NMI/Starmet site, and on potential uses for the 46-acre site. The Task Force will describe its membership, its organization, its work, and describe the questions it is aiming to address to arrive at its recommendations. Importantly, the forum will be a prime opportunity for the public to provide suggestions and ideas and to ask questions. Please consider attending to help shape the Task Force’s important work on this rare opportunity for the town. And tell your friends!

The Concord Education Fund Invites you to its Fall Fundraiser - 80's Prom! Please consider joining the Concord Education Fund and other parents in support of our public schools at this Fall's Fundraiser Event - 80's Prom!  Food catered by Saltbox Kitchen and fabulous 80's music will set the scene for a memorable and fun night raising money for our students, teachers and schools.  The party is Saturday, November 4th at 7:00pm at the Concord Scout House.  80's Prom attire is encouraged!  More details and the link to purchase tickets are on the Concord Education Fund's website.  We hope to see you there!

First annual Bandemonium concert:  The Concord Band is hosting a musical event for children and families. The band will play a variety of music, including Disney favorites, pop hits, and classic movie soundtracks. Participants are encouraged to engage in the music through a game of freeze dance, sing-alongs, and an opportunity to sit on stage with the band. Following the concert, children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of concert band instruments at our instrument petting zoo. This event is geared toward children grades K-5, however, all ages are welcome to participate. We hope to provide a fun experience for kids to see the band in action, gain exposure to classical instruments, and above all, enjoy their interaction with music! This event is held on Sunday, November 5th from 2:00pm-3:00pm at 51 Walden St., Concord, MA.     Monday, October 30 at 4:30 PM: Drop in for a festive evening decorating pumpkins! We'll provide the pumpkins and decorations; you provide the creativity. School Advisory Council Election Results:  Thank you to all those that participated in the SAC election last week.  Many thanks to all the parents that expressed an interest.  The Council should represent the diversity of our student body; therefore, the open seats are filled by one Concord parent and one METCO parent.  Thank you to Tracey Mohr and Gabrielle Haynes for your service.

Coffee with the Principal: Tomorrow, October 20th in person at Alcott 9:30am. This is a casual, informal meeting and a great opportunity for parents to chat, ask questions and connect over coffee. If you can’t make it tomorrow, there will be many other opportunities over the course of the year.

Alcott School Spirit Day: Tomorrow is Wacky Friday! Wear a mix of colors and patterns and show your school spirit!

Annual Alcott Parent Social and Silent Auction: We wanted to give a huge THANK YOU to our hosts Jen and Tom Lichoulas and all those that attended the social. It was a great night!

Thank you also to those that participated in our Alcott Silent Auction! It was a huge success that raised over $8,000 for our school and wider community! As a reminder those funds go towards: 

  • the Alcott Family Fund, which supports those families in our school community that face financial challenges

  • curriculum enrichment programs for each grade level during the school year including special assemblies or field trips

  • classroom or specialist stipends that help cover the costs our teachers incur for supplies in their classrooms over the course of the year. 

The Alcott PTG is dedicated to supporting activities that engage, enrich and enable positive community experiences for our teachers and students. We would not be able to do all of this and more without your support!  We are so grateful to have families like you that help us provide a great experience for our students, teachers and staff. Thank you for supporting the Alcott Elementary School.

Cell Phone Tower Forum:  October 19, 2023 from 5-7pm; Town House - Select Board Hearing Room, 22 Monument Square. Plans for the installation of a cell phone tower are being considered to help improve cell service in Concord Center, including coverage near Alcott School and CCHS. If you are interested in sharing your opinion about whether the town should, or should not, install an additional cell tower to improve cell service, please attend this Town forum. WCUC Earth Concert: Our neighbors at the West Concord Union Church (WCUC) are holding a free, family friendly Earth Concert next Saturday October 21 @ 2pm. 1317 Main St. Concord. WCUC has a long history in West Concord and is a treasured community resource.  WCUC partners with many local organizations, including the Fowler Library who holds events in its Welcome Garden, and is also home to the Concord Conservatory of Music. This is a secular event and any optional donations will help WCUC go green by replacing a failing, fossil-fuel oil based heating system with an efficient, low emission air-based heat pump system and help support the town's climate goals.

    The Riedel Lecture Series was created in memory of Leslie Riedel by her family and friends so that young people could meet some of their favorite authors. This year, the library is thrilled to honor Chris Van Dusen with the 11th annual Riedel Award for his impressive body of literary work for young people. He is the author and illustrator of the popular If I Built a School (and the If I Built series) and the Mister Magee series, and he is also the illustrator of the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo (among many more)! Time for book signing will follow the lecture.

Alcott Lost and Found: Lost and found items are sorted and organized every two weeks. Please ensure that all belongings, such as clothing (including hoodies and jackets), water bottles, lunchboxes, gloves, and snow gear (such as snow pants, boots, hats, and scarves), are properly labeled with the student's first initial and last name.

We kindly request your assistance in encouraging students to check the lost and found area, located outside the cafeteria. Any items labeled with the student's name will be returned to their respective classrooms. Items without a label will be stored for a duration of 30 days before being donated to those in need. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us manage the lost and found effectively.

Parent Social: The 2023-24 Alcott Parent Social will be hosted by Jen & Tom Lichoulas on Saturday, October 14th 6:30 at their home in Concord. The event will feature food from Area Four (www.areafour.com) who will bring in their mobile wood-fired oven for the night! Come by to reconnect and meet new Alcott families.  Tickets are $30 per person. BYOB

Concord Rec Offerings

Programs

  • Nashoba Ski Program grades 2-5 opened for registration yesterday for residents and will open 10/18/23 for non-residents.  Lessons are for beginner and intermediate skiers.  Snowboard lessons are a direct sign up with Nashoba. Participants in this program ski independently.  There is NO transportation to Hunt from the schools.  Ski rental day will be in November, TBD.

  • We still have a space available in the Before School Sports program. The program includes one morning per week (the day of the week depends on the grade of your student) from 8:00 am – 8:50 am.

Fitness Classes

  • Boot Camp with CarolynWednesdays, 9:30 am – 10:30 am. Hunt Gym: This one-hour class is a low impact, high intensity workout with the focus on maximum cardio benefit. We will utilize body weight and a variety of equipment and High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.) to maximize cardio, strength, and balance.

  • Baby and Me Dance! Wednesdays 11:30 - 12:20 pm. Hunt Gym: Get your groove on with your baby this fall! Bring baby in secure baby carrier for a fun dance class. We’ll jam to great tunes as we disco, two-step and salsa throughout the 30 minutes. The last 20 minutes of class includes time to get to know one another and allow the babies to visit too! This class is for non-crawling infants only - Ages 6 weeks to 6 months.  

  • Baby and Me Bootcamp! Wednesdays, 10:30 - 11:20 am. Hunt Gym: Bring your child to a great workout at Hunt Gym consisting of cardio and strength exercises. You’ll get a fantastic workout with no need for a babysitter! Be sure to bring a car seat or stroller for your child. Ages 6 weeks to 1.5 years old.

  • Stretch & ArthritisFridays, 10 - 11 am. 55 Church Street, Concord MA. The Stretch and Arthritis class is a low-impact exercise program from the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP). The objectives of this class focus on improving functional ability, mobility, muscle strength and coordination. The class aims to reduce fatigue, pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Key activities include multiple exercise activities such as warm-up, range of motion/stretching, strengthening, cardiovascular endurance, and cool down. Balance and coordination activities are included.

    The Riedel Lecture Series was created in memory of Leslie Riedel by her family and friends so that young people could meet some of their favorite authors. This year, the library is thrilled to honor Chris Van Dusen with the 11th annual Riedel Award for his impressive body of literary work for young people. He is the author and illustrator of the popular If I Built a School (and the If I Built series) and the Mister Magee series, and he is also the illustrator of the Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo (among many more)! Time for book signing will follow the lecture.

    Monday, October 30 at 4:30 PM: Drop in for a festive evening decorating pumpkins! We'll provide the pumpkins and decorations; you provide the creativity. Then, enter your pumpkin in our Pumpkin Decorating Contest (beginning at 5 PM) for the chance to win special prizes! Main Library. No registration required.

Concord-Carlisle Adult & Community Education has two new Parenting Discussion Groups! Join parent coach Allison Flynn on six mornings for a parent discussion group, sharing tips and techniques and getting new resources. Monday's session is open to all; Tuesday's will focus on parenting kids with special needs of any kind. There will be a coinciding playgroup for kids 12 months to 3 years; pre-crawling babies are welcome to stay with the parents during the discussion. Save the Date - Cell Phone Tower Forum:  October 19, 2023 from 5-7pm; Town House - Select Board Hearing Room, 22 Monument Square. Plans for the installation of a cell phone tower are being considered to help improve cell service in Concord Center, including coverage near Alcott School and CCHS. If you are interested in sharing your opinion about whether the town should, or should not, install an additional cell tower to improve cell service, please attend this Town forum.
