ALCOTT NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fifth Grade FOOD Drive To Benefit Open Table Ends Tomorrow (2/5): Please bring in donations of non-perishable food items - like soup, beans, vegetables, chili, and tuna. You can send donations in with your student or drop them off in the bin outside the front door of the school. All donations will be sorted and packed by fifth graders and delivered to Open Table before February vacation. Many thanks for your support of this great organization!

Alcott Garden Club Informational Meeting: Do you know something about gardening? Do you know something about fundraising? Do you know nothing about either, but just love fresh veggies? The Alcott Student Garden is about to enter its busy planting and teaching period, so this is a great time of year to spread the word about the Garden Committee! On Wednesday, Feb. 10th from 9:30-9:50am, the Garden Committee will host an introduction to the garden for any interested families. We will share the mission, the opportunities to help out, the perks of joining the committee, and the needs for next year. If this weren’t Covid-times, we’d be hosting a coffee, so please bring your morning coffee to your desk and join our zoom to find out more about what’s going on in the garden. No volunteer sign-ups will happen in the meeting. It is purely an informational meeting!

Alcott Staff Winter Staff Appreciation Luncheon: Like all school traditions, the Alcott Staff Winter Staff Appreciation Luncheon looks a little different this year. That said, we are more grateful than ever for the efforts of every teacher, specialist, support staff member, bus driver, and crossing guard! We are planning to supply boxed pre-made lunches from Concord Market the week of March 8th.  We usually ask our chefs and bakers to contribute pot luck dishes, but this year a one-time financial contribution would be appreciated. To Make a Financial Contribution, please submit your contribution electronically to https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=L2F2RX68HY64L by 2/26.  You may also send in a check payable to the Alcott PTG with “Staff Appreciation” in the memo line that your student drops off in the Alcott office. Many thanks! If you have further questions, please email jessicakaplowitz@gmail.com or angelalipson@verizon.net.

Concord-Carlisle Human Rights Council and COAR
(Communities Organizing Against Racism, Concord-Carlisle-Boston)
present “This Little Sign of Mine: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

For the past 27 years the Concord-Carlisle Human Rights Council has had a January celebration to honor the memory of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2021, we plan to continue this tradition and are excited to do so during a time when we recognize that our mission and the mission that Dr. King stood for is needed now more than ever. We invite community members to create and display signs in honor of Dr. King in what we are calling “This Little Sign of Mine: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”.
Get creative! How does Dr. King’s legacy inspire you? What is your dream for our community?

  • Make a poster

  • Display in a front facing window or in a front yard sign during the weekend of January 16th-18th.

  • Take a photo of your sign and email to info@cchumanrights.org by Sunday, January 17th so it can be displayed on our Facebook page on MLK Jr. Day!

This annual event is always a highlight in our calendar and we are very pleased to be able to offer this special opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s message of integration, freedom and justice for all.

Wicked Gross Science - Gross Science is not for the easily queasy! The gross yet fascinating things in life hide many science secrets like what's hidden in a diaper. Classify some creepy crawlies and neutralize smelly smells. Make some model mucus, create alien slime, have fun with other grossly amusing science adventures.

Code Wiz Classes *Registration Closes Friday, 1/15 - Code Wiz aligns its curriculum with the K–12 Computer Science Framework represents a vision in which all students engage in the concepts and practices of computer science. The framework promotes a vision in which all students critically engage in computer science issues; approach problems in innovative ways; and create computational artifacts with a practical, personal, or societal intent.

Kids Test Kitchen - Each class presents students with an opportunity to explore new or familiar foods in their raw, unmanipulated state. Then, with adult supervision and occasional assistance, we’ll work together, virtually, to slice, dice, peel, measure, and cook until we have each prepared the finished dish. The virtual experience gives students the unique opportunity to immediately share their work with family!
